No. Unless you've got cancer or any other serious health conditions, the lungs (like the liver) heal themselves. They say that a serious smoker's lungs could be healthy again after 8 years if they quit smoking.

I smoked for over 50 years, when I quit I was smoking 5 packs a day.

One Dr said there was probably a little material left from the first cigarette from over 50 years ago.

The lungs never heal, Most lungs have about 50% more capacity than you really need. So if you smoked 1 pack, you used part of that extra capacity

i think that if you can have damaged lungs with out even smoking once in your life then even smoking less than one pack is going to do little service to your body. so many bars and restaurants have allowed smoking for so long that its pretty hard to say that you've never been around 2nd hand smoke at least a handfull of times in your life. but i still wouldn't worry about it.

Even if you smoke a pack a day for your whole life, you only have a 20% chance of dying of lung cancer.

Just breathing the outside air can cause lung damage. But I doubt the one pack of smokes hurt you much... People do get lung disease and lung cancer who have never smoked.

Yes, but not permanently in the way a normal smokers are...if you want the short answer. I have read a study that says just one cigarette actually changes your DNA, so I would say the long answer is yes, but not that you would notice. I'm sorry but I cannot find the link for that study at the moment, but I believe the article on it can be found on http://www.livescience.com

There will be a certain degree of damage... but your lungs begin to repair themselves once you quit so... the sooner you quit the better off you are.
