The best way to serve eggnog is icy cold, in a large mug with a handle so the heat of your hands won't warm the nog. Before serving the eggnog, fold in a generous amount of REAL whipped cream, mixing well bit don't deflate the whipped cream.
The "nog" addition is up to you and your tastes...rum, whisky, bourbon, Irish Cream, (or just a dash of rum flavoring). Sprinkle lightly with nutmeg. This drink makes a great Milk Mustache, but served with straws is an option. The straw also serves as a stir stick to keep the good stuff mixed together.yum yum.....

Yesterday, I would have sworn blind that the best way to serve egg nog is in a nice glass, a dollop of French Vanilla ice cream to keep it icy cold, and, with a bit of white rum, dark rum, brandy or bourbon and a good grating of fresh nutmeg.
An hour ago, my sweetie brought me a mug of hot eggnog!
Warmed in the microwave on medium, she doctored it with a bit of brandy and some nutmeg, and I'm in heaven with a butterscotch-y/ eggnog/warm-to-my-toes delight! Try this!

Serve it in a nice clear glass that was in the frezer, it keeps the glass cold so the eggnog stays cool, and it adds a nice crisp frost to the glass.

In a cold glass with a shot of bourbon or rum. I would not go for the punch bowl idea. Try to use a carafe that you can place in a bowl of ice.

In a punch bowl, laced with brandy and rum, and dusted with freshly grated nutmeg. Serve a virgin bowl, too, for those who are driving. (Flavor that with a little tiny bit of vanilla or almond extract).
