Peter H. Duesberg (born December 2, 1936 in Germany) is a professor of molecular and cell biology at the University of California, Berkeley, best known for his controversial theories on the cause of AIDS.
He isolated the first cancer gene from a virus at the age of 33,[citation needed] at 36 earned tenure at the University of California, Berkeley, and at 49 was invited to the National Academy of Sciences. He was also the recipient of a seven-year Outstanding Investigator Grant from the National Institutes of Health. He has since been turned down for funding by the NIH; Duesberg alleges that this is due to his status as an AIDS dissident. He now funds his research from other sources, including charitable contributions and the sales of his books. He lives in Germany for part of the year.
On the basis of his experience with retroviruses, Duesberg has challenged the scientific consensus that HIV is the cause of AIDS by writing letters and commentary in journals as Cancer Research, Lancet, Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, Science, Nature, Journal of AIDS, AIDS Forschung, Biomedicine and Pharmacotherapeutics, the New England Journal of Medicine and Research in Immunology. He has instead proposed the hypothesis that the various American and European diseases identified as AIDS are in fact caused by the long-term consumption of recreational drugs and/or AZT, a drug that is prescribed to prevent or treat AIDS.[1]
[edit] His work
He disputes the importance of oncogenes and retroviruses in cancer and has proposed an aneuploidy hypothesis of cancer in 1997.
He offers the alternative hypothesis that recreational and pharmaceutical drug use (especially AZT, a drug used in the treatment of AIDS) and not HIV are the primary causes of AIDS outside Africa (the so-called Duesberg hypothesis). He considers HIV a marker for drug use, e.g. use of alkyl nitrites among some homosexuals, thus accounting for the correlation between HIV and AIDS.
He asserts that AIDS in Africa is mostly misdiagnosed (he notes that the diagnostic criteria for AIDS are different in Africa)[2] and that the breakdown of the immune system in African AIDS patients is explained by malnutrition, bad drinking water, and other infections.
He argues that retroviruses like HIV must be harmless to survive, because after reverse transcription from RNA to DNA, they depend on cell division to replicate (their normal mode of propagation is from mother to child)[citation needed].
In recent years a growing number of scientists have begun to support his idea that aneuploidy may indeed have a role in the formation of some cancers.[citation needed] Research on this subject is ongoing.
South African President Thabo Mbeki voiced support for the Duesberg hypothesis and suffered substantial political fallout as a result. At the 2000 International AIDS Conference in Durban, South Africa, Duesberg's view received further attention. In response to Mbeki's invitation of Duesberg and other AIDS dissidents,[3] the Durban declaration was drafted and signed by over 5,000 scientists, describing the evidence that HIV causes AIDS as "clear-cut, exhaustive and unambiguous."[4]
In 1984, before he questioned HIV's role in AIDS, Duesberg was praised by Robert Gallo, the co-discoverer of HIV.[5] Duesberg and Gallo later became highly critical of each other's work.

I offer my personal experience as testimony that this hypothesis is false. I have never used recreational drugs and have never been given AZT, yet I have AIDS. In 2004 I found out I was HIV positive. Nine days later, I was hospitalized with pneumosystis carnii pneumonia (PCP), one of the 25-30 opportunistic infections that are used as one indicator of advanced HIV or AIDS. Blood work taken while I was hospitalized showed my CD-4 (T-helper) cell count to be six (6). Any count below 200 is used as the other defining trait of AIDS. I did not start antiretrovial combo therapy until a month after being released from the hospital. Duesberg is preaching a false theory based on old data. This is dangerous as it leads uninformed individuals to assume they are not at risk of developing AIDS after infection.

Addition to address a point in Sammyboy's post below.
I have no doubt that this will continue to be a hot debate for years to come, but I would like to correct you on one piece of information in your post. You state the following:
*** For anyone wondering what drug we use to treat HIV patients today. It is AZT here is a link to it... ***
You also close with the following:
*** I urge EVERYONE to atleast do some research on the topic and not just believing everything they hear like a sheep. ***
It is true that AZT has been shown to be very toxic, especially as a mono-therapy. However, I urge you to research a little further. AZT is not the only drug being used. As a matter of fact, many doctors will only prescribe an AZT-based drug combo as a last resort. Many of the medicines that have released in the last decade do not include AZT.
In regards to Dr. Duesberg's statements regarding HIV/AIDS drug therapies (along with drug use, etc), I am still proof that his claims are not true. Just like any scientific theory, each individual must evaluate the strengths and weaknesses of any statement. I personally do not believe that Dr. Duesberg's claims will stand the test of time. Just as he argues that there is no scientifically definitive proof that HIV causes AIDS, there is also no scientifically definitive proof that it doesn't. The majority of the scientific/medical community believes that HIV leads to AIDS for most individuals and recognizes the benefits of anti-retroviral combo therapy. It is good for individuals to seek further information so they can make informed decisions. Your life is a very fragile thing that should not be fooled with lightly.
What can I say ... I would be dead now if I had not started anti-retroviral therapy after I got out of the hospital. The medication I take (Atripla) has slowed the replication of the virus and slowly begun to raise my CD-4 count (and thus my immune system).

"Dr." Duesberg is a hack and has no idea what he's talking about.
HIV exists and *IS* the cause of AIDS. AIDS is *not* caused by "environmental factors" nor the Meds used to fight HIV infection.
He is basing his conclusions on 25-year-old junk science that has been disproven over and over again.

i'm hoping he does because of the fact then he will could guard his crackpot thoughts in public, and he will publicly discredited, that's the least of what this nut case merits. AIDS is brought about via a retrovirus. you do not could have self assurance that, yet once you do not, please stay the he** out of the authentic scientists labs. human beings used to think of the Earth grow to be flat too, keep in mind? i think of Duesberg could be publicly flogged - he isn't in simple terms a nut, he's a damaging nut as his thoughts are protecting human beings from the reality approximately how they might safeguard themselves from this deadly ailment. you will in no way see the words "Nobel Laureate" after his call, and peope who do have that call have shown his ideals to be in simple terms that - ideals - and technology calls for evidence, of which he has NONE.
