It's a proven fact that harvesting vegetables kills animals. If I eat meat, they call me a murderer. But when they kill animals by harvesting veggies, they don't see what is wrong. If the animal dies, it dies. It doesn't matter if you eat it ir not. And please, do not say "it's unintentional murder," thats just pathetic. I dare any vegetarian to give me a respectable answer to this, and not just try to give a funny or derogatory answer.

What the hell is a vole?

hey dickman, you say all you are killing are voles and mice, and that is fine. So it is ok to kill animals that aren't cute and cuddely. We just shouldn't eat the cool ones. Nice point. You are totally correct. Mice deserve to die, but pigs don't. Thats a good belief to run your whole life around.

OK, I'll humor you.
When a carrot is harvested, a vole dies. OK, so for every carrot I eat, I'm indirectly killing a vole or mouse.
What about you? You eat what, three ounces of meat a day? It took several pounds of grain to produce that much meat in a chicken, pig or cow. That grain was harvested by machines and also killed just as many voles and mice. Of course it doesn't happen with pasture but most animals are not pasture fed in North America. Certainly not pigs and chickens, and only a few cattle are.
So let's do the math. I kill voles and mice. You kill voles, mice, cows, pigs and chickens intentionally. What's worse?
A vole is a rodent. And if you bothered to read my answer CAREFULLY, you'll see I never justified killing rodents. I just said, Mr Smart Guy, that both you and I participate in the killing of rodents. Both of us are equally guilty in that. But YOU, as a meat eater go further and kill other animals too. Now tell me who is worse.

Okay, so... for it to be okay for a vegetarian to eat vegetables, they have to grow their own, to ensure no animals are killed? Otherwise we're hypocrites right?
(Just trying to understand)
I don't want to get all preachy (too late, but) why is it that because vegetarians try to stand up for something, and make a difference, we have to be 100% accurate and effective in everything we do. Yes, animals may die when a field is harvested, but... these animals die when grain and feed is harvested for your fleshy meals as well. So, as a part of the bigger picture, we vegetarians are still assisting in preventing the needless killing of more animals. Also, field mice, snakes, etc. that are harmed during harvest, are not tortured and treated poorly before their death... as cows, pigs, chickens, etc. are.
Oh, and lets be fair.... an answer is not pathetic, just because you don't agree.
Many animals unintentionally die every day, for all sorts of reasons. You can't stop it all, but, it's the small efforts that everyone puts in that counts.

Are you considering becoming a vegetarian, since you've asked this question before in a slightly different form?
And as I said in an earlier reply to your similar question, there are such things as hydroponically grown vegetables. If you are considering the vegetarian lifestyle and your conscience is too tender to consume vegetables that may have contributed to the death of an animal, then perhaps this is the alternative you should consider.
If you're not familiar with what's involved in growing vegetables hydroponically, then just let me know and I'll be happy to find a website that will go into more detail.

I guess it depends on where the vegetarians are getting the vegetables. The ones I eat are not grown in the wild, depriving any animal from eating and therefor causing starvation. They are grown on farms that are controlled and have little or no animal contact. You're right, murder is murder. If someone was to hang a child upside down, slit their throat and let the blood drain from them after driving a metal rod through their skull, it would be just as bad as if someone took all the food away from that child. SO YOU WIN! Alot of vegetarians do grow their own vegetables as well as fruit.

Well you want a real answer here it is.
Animals are not killed because we harvest veggies. 80% of farmers crops are fed to animals that will later be turned into human food or products. Now, animals that are used for food are mass produced...meaning that they are being impregnated in mass numbers to keep up with demand of the food market. If people did not eat meat there would be no need to MASS produce animals...and therefore animals wouldn't eat as much veggies & grains. Are you following??? So rather than 80% of our agriculture being used for animals that are killed....it would rather be used for humans and animals that are kept alive.

I've never heard that harvesting fruits and vegetables kills animals, so I'm not sure what you're referring to that it's a proven fact. I've worked in agriculture for about 10 years, and I've never seen any animals die because of our harvesting practices, and that's a fact. Agriculture has it's own problems, but animal murders just doens't sound like one I'm familiar with.
Also if someone's calling you a murderer for eating meat, that's just not right either. I don't eat meat, but respect everyone's right to eat what they want.
Also I don't eat meat, not because of murdering the animals, but because of the practices I've seen in places where animals are raised for food. 90% of food borne illness in the country is from improperly prepared meats. Meat processing is extremely questionable.
Also antibiotics are used growth hormones, etc...
It takes a hugh amount of grains and water to produce a small amount of meat, so it is inequitable in production means as well. all that grain and water could feed more people than the meat can - another fact...
Veggies have their problems too though, pesticides, and such,
Anyway. Let's just be tolerant of each other. It's no biggie. Do what you want and let other do as well...

Some vegetarians have very strong views on animal rights. They dont think that animals should be raised in some of the cruel condtions an then brutally killed. what your talking about is small animals like mice that live in the fields which i agreee with you that murder is murder. But they are not killing the mice on purpose. or i dont think they are.
but if you think about it alot of things we do kills animals.
like cutting down forests to build towns or for lumber thats cutting back the animals habbiats and down on their food.
an in some cases all vegetarians dont have the space or the time to grow their own veggies.

I don't see how harvesting veggies will kill animals. I'm an animal-lover but I do eat meat. Veggies don't kill animals; my dog eats veggies once in a while and he's doing just fine. Veggies won't kill anyone unless they are contaminated with E Coli or some other foodborne illness.

Even though I am an advocate for animal rights, I'm not a vegetarian and ONLY support in season hunting, but I'm curious; how does harvesting veggies kill animals?
To answer your question, my mom used to have a vegetable garden and what with her carreer and hectic schedule, she had very little time to tend to it. Her project went belly up =( So perhaps people do not have time for a veggie garden. I dunno. Just my two cents.
