Ketones are the byproduct of a process called Gluconeogenesis, If your body cannot use glucose for fuel, because of a shortage of insulin, then it has to make it's own fuel. It breaks down fat stores for this, and the end waste product is ketones. We find them in your urine and blood, it tells us your diabetes is not under control. Too high ketones= trouble/illness

Food is important, I'm 14 and whenever I am sick my levels go CRAZY! So much we have to ring the doctor's like 4 times a day, and then I will go to hospital. Different people have different reactions to illlness however. I had this situation once, where my keytones were high, and blood levels were low and that was because I wasn;t eating or having my injections, so make sure you are doing both.

Ketones are the small molecules that are acidic. As a diabetic, you can have to many ketones, and develop a life threatening condition called ketoacidosis.
