Cardiac surgery is surgery on the heart and/or great vessels. Frequently, it is done to treat complications of ischemic heart disease (e.g. coronary artery bypass grafting), correct congenital heart disease, or treat valve problems created by various causes including endocarditis. It also includes heart transplantation.
Please see the web page for more details on Cardiac surgery.

Literally it is an operation inside or outside the heart. Technically it is an operation of heart as well as major blood vessels in proximity. Surgery can either be a closed procedure (Closed Mitral Valve, Interruption of Patent ductus Arteriosus etc.) or Open heart procedure. Some operation of blood vessels in reverse pattern; ie. aorta with venous blood and pulmonary artery which is supposed to carry desaturated venous blood carries arterilized blood, necessitating a switch over procedure, called Arterial switch. Another vascular surgery designated as Open Heart is Coronary Artery Bypass Graft (repair of blood vessels delivering blood to walls of the heart. eventhough blood moves through the inside of the heart, the area of contact is minimal and nutrial transfer is impossible) Otheropen heart surgeries are valve replacement, septal closures after opening the wall of the heart.

IT IS A LAST RESORT SURGERY TO REPAIR SOMETHING IN THE HEART. THE TERM CARDIAC SURGERY TRANSLATES TO HEART OPERATION. CARDIO=HEART, AND SURGERY=OPERATION. GL
P.S. IT IS ALWAYS A LAST RESORT.
