Good question, I had to think. I think it is sacrificed white corpuscles similar to pus (sorry, that grosses me out).

The yellow sputum is from the breakdown of white blood cells in the lungs (PUSS), green sputum is old puss that has been stuck down there for a while. Clear is good, normal sputum. If you are coughing a lot you might notice a little blood, that is no big deal, just from all the coughing, if you get up big clots of blood, than that is bad, pink frothy is also very bad.

See your doc.

Yellow or green mucous are signs of an infection.
Clear is normal. You can check kp.org for more information or go to webmd.com.

Infection....Theres your answer in a nutshell. Anytime mucus isn't clear an infection is usually there. See your family MD. Antibiotics are most likely in order.

The "yellow" is what is fighting the infection. People commonly think this is the "sickness" but it isn't, it's the antibodies. "Clear" is the actual infection.

Peace.
