Lentils are legumes. The edible part of the plant is the seed.

Yes, lentils are like peas and grow in a pod. For some quirk of fortune such plants are termed legumes in English. This is a French word and refers to all vegetables and has possibly added to the confusion. Plants from the pea/bean family have tendrils which grab onto anything and grow upwards - or in the case of the peanut, downwards.

lets get this straight first ,the crop that is harvested from underground is what is known as ground nut, peanut or as some call it monkey nuts, now to move on to lentils.it comes from a leguminous shrub, which bears fruit, like all legumes in a pod shape, when the seed within the pod swell & their growth is complete the pod & shrub begin to dry out & go from green to a dry brown,at this stage the crop is harvested.when the pods are fully dry they are shelled ,the seeds have a dark brown seed coat, the whole lentil peas are used in some dishes, but mostly the seed is de husked & you then get the lentil in the form you see at the grocers or the super market.

It's peanuts that grow under the ground (the flower grows into the ground after being pollinated). Since peanuts are also legumes, your roommate is confusing them with lentils.

I believe they grow on bushes rather like peas. They are then dried and maybe whole or split.
