My dad's got a problem. His breath smells very rotten and it stinks up the car. The smell is very strong and nauseating. It doesn't matter how often he gargles or brushes his teeth, and he has no gaping cavities, tooth decay, or anything like that.

He's a musician- has been for 35 years, playing classic rock & roll in smokey restaurants, clubs, and bars. So he's been exposed to plenty of second hand smoke in his time, but he's never been a smoker himself. The man is 57 now.

Could this be a warning sign for a serious condition, such as mouth / throught / lung cancer? He's had the bad breath problem for a couple years now and isn't hacking real hard or anything.

It's probably to do with an infection rather than cancer. It is possible to have abscesses in the gums or infection in the throat that can persist like this even if he doesn't have gaping cavities in his teeth.

I don't know if this is a warning sign, but I do know that taking zinc tablets helps with bad odor. Take zinc if you stink. Here is a link to an interesting avenue for your father http://losangeles.craigslist.org/wst/vol/245108518.html
