When supine, the body mass "spreads" out. When standing, gravity is more in play causing the mass to "drop".

When the pt is supine or sniffing as one of my professors would have a lower VC than a person in standing position because the lungs can't expand as well while they are lying down. Standing you get full range to put it simple. Is this a homework question? Or did you dig this out of your head and just want to know?

the vital capacity is the amount of air that can be forcibly exhaled after a deep, deep breath measured in cubic centimeters (cc)...the standing position is self-explanitory..its easier to take a deep breath...the supine position is just laying on your back and doing the same...maybe they're trying to determine how short of breath this person really is for any number of reasons.
