You are more likely to contract it if you have sex with someone who is having an outbreak. Even if they don't have an outbreak it is still possible for you to contract herpes even if you have protected sex. Go to the doctor and they will give you a blood test to find out.

if they were having an outbreak, you would most likely notice it. this is one instance where condoms don'y help much as herpes is spread through contact with the sores and not by exposure to tainted bodily fluids.
