it shocking to know how many people don't know what they eat....The majority of Marsh Mellow says "Pork Geletine" on the ingredients list

Hi Michael

Try VeganStore.co.uk (link below). They have the same sweets as advertised on the American sites, although they're a bit more expensive - £5.99 compared with $3.79!! However, you get Brownie points (or should that be Greenie points?!) for the lower food miles if you order within the UK ;-)

I'm going to order some for Christmas and make a great big gooey fondue on Boxing Day. Yum!

By the way, FHG - check this out. My *sourced* information (see link at end) states that:

"Gelatin hydrolysates have putative activity against degenerative joint disease (DJD)." Putative=supposed, ie not proven

"Claims that gelatin can fight arthritis and help maintain healthy joint cartilage and bone are to date poorly supported." Note the words "poorly supported", ie not proven.

QED :-)))

Not entirely sure....but here is a recipe if you want to make them yourself!

_Marshmallows_ Makes about 1 3/4 lbs.

Put in the mixing bowl and let stand 1 hour:

3 tablespoons kosher veg gelatin (this is 3 packets of Emes)
1/2 cup water

In about 1/2 hour, begin to prepare a syrup. Place in a heavy pan over low
heat and stir until dissolved:

2 cups sugar (I used unbleached)
3/4 cup light corn syrup
1/2 cup water
1/4 teaspoon salt

When the mixture start to boil, cover it about 3 minutes to allow any
crystals which have formed to be washed down from the sides of the pan.
Be )careful, though, not to let the mixture boil over.
Continue to cook uncovered and unstirred over high heat to the firm-ball
stage (244 degrees F). Overcooking makes the marshmallows tough. Remove
the mixture from heat and pour slowly over the gelatin, beating constantly
with an electric mixer. Continue to beat about 15 minutes after all the
syrup has been added. While beating, when the mixture is thick but still
smooth, add:

2 tablespoons vanilla extract.

Put the mixture into an 8 x 12 in pan that has been lightly dusted with
cornstarch. Dust the top with cornstarch and set aside. When it has
dried for )12 hours, remove it from the pan, cut it into square with
scissors dusted with )cornstach, and store the fully dusted pieces in a
closed tin.

Have a go at making your own, it's everso easy. The recipe was invented by the Romans over 2000 years ago.

Try the Kosher section of your local supermarket. I got some at Sainsburys. Just plain ones, but it's not hard to melt some chocolate and dip them in. They don't melt as well as normal marshmallows though, as I learnt when I put some into my hot chocolate...

Gelatin is a necessary nutritional supplement for bone and joint health. The gelatin peptides are rich in the amino acids found in collagen, including L-proline, L-hydroxyproline, and glycine.

Gelatin is beneficial in fighting degenerative joint disease (DJD). Gelantin also fights arthritis and helps maintain healthy joint cartilage and bones. This has been substantiated by strong scientific evidence.

A diet with out gelatin will result in DJD, so I strongly suggest you take some gelatin supplements if you are eating marsh mellows lacking in nutrients.
