well if the professor wants something unique how about going with something of your ethnic heritage?? even if you do not have a lot of cash I am sure it would be nice to bring a dish from your background even if it would not feed all 50 people. I doubt all 50 people would get a chance to try everyone else's dishes so no worries there. So if your chinese go pick up some chinese food, or you can go get some fortune cookies from the store. Greek there are greek fast food around and get some baklava etc. hope this helps happy eating!

I always make this and it's a show stealer.
Buy two to Three dozen eggs, hard boil them. carefully remove shells. Slice them in half the long way. Remove all the yolks into a mixing bowl, add 3/4 cup of mayo. Mix well to the creamy point. Put a tablespoon in each egg. Flatten filling, level with the egg. Sprinkle eggs lightly with paprika, put on serving platter, garnish with parsley leaves on the sides but don't overdo it. Just put it on the buffet and they will come, oh, yes they will come. It'll be the first to go, guaranteed. Three dozen eggs makes 72 portions. Peace.

You seem to have a misconception of "fundies". I am not one, but the ones I know are educated, did very well in school and live very successful lives. They just don't buy evolution. I had science classes with a few, they didn't have a heart attack. They could accept that some don't believe as they do. It seems that atheists are the only ones that refuse to let others have an opinion.

I don't think that donuts are an ethnic food, anyway. Why don't you get some frozen mini egg rolls and bake them in the morning.

does it have to be a sweet?.. make a savory appetiser.
get a long loaf of french bread,, slice it in little rounds.. toast the rounds, then get some ready pasta sauce in a jar, plop a large spoon full, and add a couple of sprigs of onion, green peppers, olives, maybe a tiny piece of sliced pepperoni (or any sliced meat, like hotdogs, or deli meat) and a handful of mozarella... bake them for 5-10 min till cheese melts.. take these in.. they will be gone in a second...

Chocolate truffles!!
Easy to make and very quick.
Get chocolate flavoured biscuits (chocolate ripple are good!), crunch them up, mix in some condensed milk and coconut and make into ball shapes. Roll them in coconut to cover them and they're ready.
People love them and will compliment you!
