Yes,there are definite evidences of association of cholesterol with heart attack.Cholesterol enhances the procedure of atherosclerosis.In simple words,it makes your blood vessels thick,narrow and inelastic.So they lose their property of carrying adequate amount of blood to heart,to any organ for that sake.Further,as they can't dilate,they can't cope up with the raised demand of heart for blood when heart beats faster as when during exercise and heart suffers.This leads to many structural and functional derangements in heart and finally precipitates heart attack.
It has been shown that saturated fats contain more of such compounds-LDL,VLDL etc.They raise cholesterol and triglycerides and increase incidence of heart attack
