Make sure this person starts documenting any type of comment and keeps in contact with HR. If discriminatory actions are taken by the boss, then it's time to step things up even to where the persons sues.

If there were more than one witness, then I would try to get everyone to go to HR and file a report. Or the Labor board in your state. Might need an attorney to document it -- obviously the boss is rude and cruel, but if he's kept the guy for 4-5 years then it seems he's accepted the situation (and likes his work.)

I'm taking a guess that the company has its own individual insurance plan and a reason he may have said it is possibly the has more dr visits and/or he may raise insurance simply by his diagnosis being on record based on the HIGH cost of health care for diabetes in later stages.

A lot of bosses have the dollar as a bottom line, which is how they end up bosses ;) and some have various degrees of willingness to step on anyone for any reason.

I'd feel sorry for the guy having to treat people so poorly. What he said was so uncalled for.

He is an ignorant, insensitive jerk and should never have said that inthe presence of other employees. If the diabetic had only one hypoglycemic episode in 4-5 years, he's doing very well. Employees get sick more often than that in 4-5 years. What he said is like saying, "If I knew you were going to get bronchitis, catch a cold, have strep throat, have to go to the doctor's, get arthritis, get any chronic condition,...I wouldn't have hired you." What an a**. Maybe it's time to look for another job with people who are more compassionate.
