Insulin is needed to transport the glucose (sugar) into the cells. Without Insulin or if there is not enough Insulin in your system to do this the glucose stays in the blood stream and the cells do not get the glucose they require to function properly. The body will then break down fat into a glucogen to help feed the cells some type of glucose. This in turn can cause the person to go into a diabetic ketoacidosis state. They virtually go into a coma and they require insulin to drive the glucose back into the cells
People that have this are Diabetics and as a result of Diabetes they can a niumber of health problems Strokes, blindness, kidney problems and heart problems are some disease associated with Diabetes.

as a type one diabetic, i know all the symptoms that may occur.
well if you have high blood sugar, you might fell thirsty all the time and always have to go urinate, you might lose some weight EVEN if you eat a lot (i mean A LOT) (but that's only if you have high blood sugar for a LONGG while) when i got diagnosed with diabetes, i was about 15 pounds underweight..
you might fell dizzy or drowsy and tired..
If you have low blood sugar, you feel weak and stark shaking, you might even feel lost and unable to walk straight (a little as if you were drunk)
You might even feel sleepy and just want to sleep it off, low blood sugar is very dangerous, because it leads to a coma if you don't do anything about it.
hope this helps!

I can't remember the first name of the doctor, but his last name is Bates and he has written many texts for med students (we use it in nursing as well). Anyhow, if you can figure out his name by locating one of the books, then I am sure you'll be able to find some type of research on this subject. Also, try UCLA website they have really great resources on many different medical topics-this may proove more fruitful in your quest. Best of Luck in your search.
