Try increasing your fluid intake before you do anything else. Add bran into your diet and eat plenty of fresh fruit and vegetables too. Don't be surprised if you suffer from what appears to be diaorrhea for the first few days into your new regime, this is completely normal, but does not mean the constipation is cleared, it is called overflow. After this you should be evacuating your bowels daily, sometimes twice a day, don't worry this is normal. Best of luck and good health. Remember your G.P is always there to help and you will not embarrass him/her with your complaint. Merry Christmas!

Him- I'm a colon hydrotherapist so obviously my first suggestion is book yourself a course of colonics - Several very close together would be beneficial so that you get a total clear out.

It is difficult to give specific advice however I find that most of my clients find a product called Lepicol works a treat. Not only does it introduce beneficial fibre into your diet and get you going it also help to repopulate your digestive tract with good bacteria.

It is essential to drink two litres of water per day and I find that the vast majority of my clients who are constipated are simply not drinking enough water (and usually don't have enough fibre either).

Avoid processed foods, refined carbohydrates, sugar, sweets, caffeine etc and eat a diet high in wholegrains, fresh fruit and veg, nuts and seeds, good quality protein. Pears are especially high in fibre and particularly good for your colon.

Milk is a common cause of constipation as many people are intolerant without realising it.

Avoid dry foods such as crackers, Ryvitas, crisps, cereal bars, sugar breakfast cereals.

Get some exercise every day. 15 minutes on a trampet first thing in the morning is a good way of waking your bowels up.

You could also try doing a herbal colon cleanse. There is a product I have tried recently which is not yet available in the UK but you can buy it from http://www.drnatura-eu.com . It is absolutely brilliant and will give you a really deep clean without causing griping or any urgency to use the bathroom. It tastes OK too and is easy to take.

I had a really bad spell of this, I was on dietry medication which had the unfortunate side effect of giving you the most scary painfull constipation, the constipation made you scared to eat, I think that may have been the point.

Prune juice is fairly good, but I mixed it with cod liver oil and sennacot for extra effect. it is important to stay hydrated and eat a high fibre breakfast cereal (if nothing else high fibre).

plenty of fruit & veg also helps keep those nasty Bricks away

if you think that you are in for an impending wardrobe, it might be helpful to have a colonic (although most people shy away from that sort of thing)

I once ate about 2lbs of grapes (absentmindedly whilst watching a movie) and drank a litre of orange juice, it's not something I'll be trying again soon.

Although Chilli peppers have been reputed to help in this matter it's about as funny as applying a blowtorch to your ring, so be carefull of this one.

Nearly all the advice that was offered are good ways to rid constipation. When all else fails see your doctor. There are meds out now to help with an ongoing constipation problem. If ongoing you should seek medical attention anyway.

Have you heard of papaya fruit? You can buy in most of the super market. You have to eat half riped. I cook the raw papaya and eat it with rice. Next day morning......havens!!!!!!
( peel and cut the raw papaya and take all the pips off. leave some in if it's white. not black. grate it and keep it a side. In a pan pour little oil and then add some chopped onion let it fry for a minute and then add some shredded coconut mix it and add the papaya. Add turmeric yellow powder stir well and then add salt for your taste. Eat it with cooked rice.

you can eat papaya once or twice a week. CARE!! pregnant ladies or ladies with monthly period are not to eat this fruit.

Well, if it's due to low thyroid (hypothyroidism) it would require a bloodtest then a pill a day. if it's due to your diet, drink lots of water, juices and eat bran cereals and fiber. Certain medications may be causing your constipation too. Speak to your doctor and let him/her know

Drink plenty of water, herbal teas or similar drinks. Eat fruit and fibre-rich food - especially dried apricots and prunes. Gentle exercise is good. If all else fails, try a laxative.

Change your diet: eat prunes, drink fresh orange juice, try a cold drink first thing in the morning. All Bran is good, so are baked beans. Good luck!
