She had chosen the vegetarian option. They thought that fish and seafood were vegetarian foods. Why would someone think this?

Although a lot of people seem to be under the impression that fish is not meat, I think they either forgot or did not have a vegetarian meal on board.

My sister was a flight attendant for a few years. She said the special meal orders were a pain because they often didn't receive the special food instructions, or did not receive the food itself. Heck, sometimes they didn't even receive enough food for everyone on the flight!

You have your answer by asking on Yahoo! Answers, viz:

There are a lot of idiots out there.

For said idiots, or friends of idiots (what is it with all the "My cousin is a vegetarian and she eats chicken" stuff on Y! Answers?):

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vegetarianism

I hope your question makes the "I can eat whatever I want...I don't have to do what I'm told...I can eat (etc) and still call myself (etc)" crowd a bit more aware of the problems they cause normal adults. Sheeeesh!

I grant that, given how often I see stuff like "oyster sauce" touted as vegetarian on Oriental menus, there may be a cultural difference I'm not aware of, but I don't think that's relevant on an international airline. I can't find any reference to it at all on-line, either.

On the flip side, I once asked for a vegetarian meal, and got a thoroughly inedible, possibly vegan one. It was:

-- a stale, unbuttered bagel
-- 2 slabs raw zucchini (!!)
-- 1 packet of some sort of lemon and rice vinegar sauce
(I think I was supposed to make a sandwich out of that...)
-- and a bad cookie. "R.W. Frookie" brand, which is seen in health food stores. I'm doubtful it was even vegan. Everybody else got Pepperidge Farm, which I took a look at; it had fewer calories and seemed generally _healthier_ than the hippie cookie.

Your friend has my sympathies. I'd tell her to write a letter -- no -- ask her to, very kindly, because people need to do that more often for other people's sake. I hope it wasn't a long flight.

This happens because of all the pescavegetarians out there who wrongly call themselves vegetarians. The airline probably dealt with "vegetarians" in the past who said fish was ok and then got the wrong impression. Your friend should have clarified what the vegetarian meal would be, as many people are confused by what is and isn't vegetarian.

If you eat fish, you are NOT a vegetarian!!! How many times do we have to convince the meat-eaters of this fact?! A person who eats fish and not other meat is NOT a vegetarian! He/she is just an omnivore who doesn't consume beef, chicken, pork, etc. Understand the difference. Unless fish grow on trees, don't spout rubbish that fish is vegetarian food.

Anyway to answer your original question, I don't know. Another reason to distrust airline food I guess.

Well, it could be because some people believe that since fish don't walk on land it isnt considered "meat." At one point of each year, Catholics are not suppose to eat MEAT on every friday for like a month, but the bible says you can still eat anything that doesn't walk on land. This could be why someone thought it was okay to serve fish to a vegetarian.

Many vegetarians eat fish and other forms of seafood. I live in Alaska, so it's very impractical for vegetarians not to eat fish. It really depends on culture and heritage. Since your friend was on a flight to Singapore I believe it's safe to say the fish is a crucial part of Asian culture. It's no different than fresh tropical fruit served on a flight to the Caribbean.

People who eat fish should not call themselves vegetarians, as they aren't Fish is NOT vegetarian in any way, shape or form. It's animal, and therefore meat. I would complain to the air company if I was her, as this is out of order. People need to be aware that vegetarians can't eat fish.

Maybe is it was a cultural difference, or maybe the person in charge of putting the meal together just didn't understand. Either way, I'd be really annoyed if I went to the trouble of specifying my dietary needs and wound up with a fish on my tray. :0(

Good question. I guess it's just ignorance. I see ignorance in many answers you are getting too! I don't understand why people just don't get it. Vegetarians do not eat animals..period.

Meat is a fancy word for flesh. Last time I checked..fish have flesh.
