About $50,000! What do you mean by "a normal monitor?" Do you mean a home heart and respiratory monitor supplied by a medical supply company? These are usually "professioal quality", but much more simple...have much fewer capabilities than hospital monitors. Hospital monitors are desinged to monitor heart rate, respiratory rate, blood pressure, arterial pressure, pulse oximetry, and other pressure lines.

medical grade monitors are always better than normal monitors as its image quality enables the physician to report for small lesions which otherwise can be missed out in regular monitors. for example in mammographic report, normal monitors will not pick up very small lesions and thus can be dangerous to patient, if reported negative. but medical grade monitors, due to better luminescence, offers better image quality, depth and helps in reading smaller lesions.

Don't know for certain but I think it would have to do with not giving off emissions which may interfere with pacemakers or other medical equipment. Normal CRT monitors produce a strong local magnetic field which may cause interference with electronic devices nearby.
