This is your life
This is just like the TV show. You build a book with the life history included in it. This is a great one to do as a PowerPoint presentation. You then proceed to introduce people from their past. You could if you want present a bound book with the newspaper from the week they were born.
1966 Party
A great theme for the year you (or your partner) were born. You could wear Mini shirts and single breasted suits.
Murder Mystery
Spend it at a hotel with as many friends as you can allow (or afford). Plan a 'Murder Mystery' game (instructions available on-line). Everyone should plan to stay in one area of the hotel. The possibilities are endless.
Wild west night
Wild west nights are always a laugh. We had 1 for my partener when he turned 40. We hired a mechanical bull and had his favourite 40 songs playing all night at the local centre. It was great.

How about this. You call his work and prearange this first. Call in the middle of the day and tell him you have to come home immediately. Have one employee help get him situated and walk him outside. Have a limo waiting in the parking lot to take him around. In the limo, have a written clue to where he has to go next - Don't be too specific! He then has to tell the limo driver where to go. Leave clues around various places important or frequented by you both. The final stop will be where the limo drops him off for his next clue, i.e. a hotel, hall, or home. When he gets there, everyone is waiting to suprise him or you are if it's just the two of you (I'll leave the final suprise up to you!).

Do the two of you ski? How about a getaway to a ski villa? You can host a small party in the lodge if you choose to invite guests or you can celebrate all by yourselves in the romantic white mountains. If you choose to go by yourselves, search the web for a great place to stay and wonderful places to eat. The lights from the slopes and the roar of a fire is certainly where I'd want to be, a chance to get away from the stresses of everyday life. What the heck, go even if you don't ski!

Take him south, just the two of you for a romantic holiday, either weekend or week...then when you come back, arrange a nice gathering of his favourtie people at your house to "roast" him on his past 40 years of life (be sure to include all persons who know him, past, present, and will know him as time goes on....make sure you have comfort food, drink and atmosphere with your get together and you will create a memory for life, especially at 40!!
