I've been vegetarian for about 8 months and feeling really tired lately. Could that be related? And if so, what should I take to become less tired. Thanks in advance.

If you are generally in good health and the only thing that recently modified is your diet, feeling tired and being a vegetarian can be related. There are certain vitamins and minerals (for examples, zinc, iron, and vit B12) that are naturally more abundant in foods that come from animals. Since these vitamins and minerals are important in maintaining the body healthy, being deficient can result in fatigue, weakness, anemia, lower immunity, etc. My recommendation is for you to take a multivitamin supplement that is rich in zinc, iron, and vit B12. There are many brands of supplements out there in the market. Best is to go to a pharmacy and ask a pharmacist to recommend you a brand that most fits your needs.

I would recommend that you talk to your doctor and request some blood work. Do NOT take an iron supplement unless you know your iron is low. Too much iron in your blood can be deadly.

In order to increase the absorption of iron, drink some fruit juice along with any meal that has iron-containing foods in it. For example, if you are having beans, drink a glass of orange juice with it to enhance iron absorption.

The are two different type of iron in food: haem iron, found in red meat seafood and poultry, and non-haem iron found in breads, fruits, breakfast cereals, vegetable, legumes (e.g. baked beans), nuts and eggs.

Haem iron foods are rich in iron and contain iron in the form that is easily absorbed by the body. Red meat also has a special effect on iron absorption. The meat when eaten together with the vegetables, can boost the absorption of non-haem iron by up to four times. Vitamin C also has a similar positive effect on the absorption of iron.

In other words, the key to an iron rich diet is to eat a combination of iron rich foods high in both haem and non-haem iron.

I love how some people jump to conclusions about what must be wrong with no idea what his diet is like.

Please tell us the following:

What you typical daily diet looks like
Sleeping habits
Recent stress
Relevant medical conditions
Whether a doctor has ruled out any pathology or not


Without this basic information it's hard to judge where the problem is coming from.

Definitely! You are probably not getting enough iron in your diet (which would normally come from red meat). Lack of iron in your blood is a sign of anemia, which will make you tired. Try taking some iron suppliments daily for the next couple of weeks.

related to being a vegetarian? could be. could also be the hours of daylight are getting shorter and the nights are getting longer. After December 22nd the hours of daylight will begin to increase, if you start feeling more awake after that date you'll know why.

It could be, or it could be something else entirely. Go get a blood workup-make sure you are not anemic, etc. It's better to figure out WHY you are tired than start guessing.

i think that it is probly a lack of iron, since u arent eating red meats, so try taking some iron supplements! good luck! =]
