There are a couple of things that you can do here. You can either make namecards and prearrange seating before anyone can say anything, or you can make it a game and number your seats and have everyone choose a number out of a hat as they are arriving. Good Luck.

Because you're having 40-50 people I am going to assume that this is not a 'sit down' dinner. If it is...easy enough...place cards. Mix it up. Put the most unlikely people next to each other. I should try that...sounds like fun...maybe even a bit evil.

Maybe you could put everyones names on placecards, place them in a container, draw out eight or ten at a time and seat them at tables. Sometime during the party, do it again. This way it could be part of the entertainment, sort of "musical tables". Allow enough time, maybe an hour for each session.

I would just let people sit wherever they want. I take it you want to get some people to know other people better. I would just let people gravitate naturally to people they're most interested in talking to. Alot of times it's not that people dislike each other it's just that they don't really have much in common and their personalities just don't "click". It can be kind of awkward sitting with someone and you don't know what to talk about.

You can also make name tags with different christmas type of people (examples: Mrs. Clause, Rudoulf, Mary, Jesus, etc) and you place one name tag on each persons back. (make sure they don't see who they have) Then they have to walk around all night and ask people questions to figure out who they are. (such as am I an animal or human, am i real or make believe) This is a great game to play to get people to mingle around.

don't make people uncomfortable. I know if I came to your party and you did that I would never do it agian. You could play a game and pick a name out of a hat for teams I think that would be ok

get out a graph of the where the tables are at and put ppl you want to sit by each other on the graph. it is very helpful and it will organize everything. make little name cards or find somebody to show them where they sit.

Make name cards for everyone, and then before party starts ask everyone to please take a seat where there card is.That is a very good idea,we did this at one of our sorority meetings.Had a blast. We had fun introducing ourselves to each other.
