#1 most important thing to know: Chromium picolinate or Chromium GTF. Chromium is a trace mineral that is vital to blood sugar control--insulin can't work without it. So even if your pancreatic beta cells are malfunctioning, you still need chromium to assist what little insulin you do produce. The average North American diet is somewhat deficient in chromium due to industrial monocropping in agriculture, which saps minerals from soil by repeatedly growing the same plants year after year. So unless your diet is high in brewer's yeast or blackstrap molasses, chromium supplementation is a good idea for everyone, especially diabetics.
Another couple things I always tell diabetics is that cinnamon and stevia are their new best friends. Cinnamon can be added to teas, coffee, smoothies, cereals, etc, and even taken as a supplement because it helps regulate blood sugar. Stevia is a natural sugar replacement that has no effect on insulin, and has no harmful metabolites, so it's safe for daily use to sweeten your food and drinks. Stevia is available in powder and liquid form, and there's usually a conversion chart on the packaging to help with baking.
Take care,
Tabitha.
PS. Don't forget that a diabetic needs a source of protein at every meal!

This answer is for type 1 (insulin-dependent) diabetics: That no matter how well you take care of yourself and manage your diabetes, the disease still takes its toll on all of the major organs:eyes, nerves, kidneys, heart, brain --and the longer you've had it, the more serious the complications are. My mother has had it for 44 years and her blood sugar levels still fluctuate unpredictably. She can have a blood sugar level of 500 and feel fine. Also, it's better to go to bed with high blood sugar and wake up the next morning,------ than run low, have a hypoglycemic reaction in the middle of the night---- and not wake up in the morning.

I am a 40-year diabetic (type 1). It is absolutely necessary for the diabetic to be aware of the disease in it's entirety. He/she must be involved in controlling it and he/she must REGULARLY check the blood sugars to do so. I use a natural sweetener called stevia in all of my baking, cooking, and sweetening. It has been used for hundreds of years without any problems in South America. Have a great holiday.

That intensive control of blood sugar level may delay the damage to end organs like the kidneys.
That's is a deceptive condition -- you may feel fine even with a high blood sugar but your vital organs are slowly but surely being damaged.
