I am having a few freinds over and just want to put plastic spoons, plates, glasses, and a few appetizers on the table. And I want to do that while the runner is still on there. How do I manage that? Should I put some stuff on the runner as well or avoid the runner? I usually use 1 place mats for up plates/spoons/glasses and then separate ones for the appetizer plates.

I like the idea of a runner on a round table because it's not what you expect to see. If you have a flair for design you can do it successfully. However, place mats would be too "over the top", in my opinion.

But - really, please use real dishes and silverware if you are trying to make a stylish presentation.

Um, I think you need to pick whether this is a fancy party, or a casual party.
If it's fancy, keep the runner, (no place mats though) but go with REAL cutlery and dishes.
If it's not fancy, then lose the runner. Either use your place mats, or get a paper or plastic tablecloth at the dollar store or walmart. Then you can go with the plastic utensils and disposable dishes.
Mixing both would just be weird.
And a runner can go on any shape table really, but you don't eat on it, it goes in the middle and you put your centerpiece, or your candles, or your salt & pepper and the serving dishes on it.

Sounds like too much runner and place mat action going on to me. If I were you I would get a really nice (large) basket and decorate the handle with sprigs of holly and pine branches and bows. Then I would put the plates stacked in it and two nice glasses filled with the silverware in one and rolled napkins in the other. This will look pretty and save a lot of room on the table without making things look cluttered and disorganized. Have a great time

Lose the runner and use a paper table cloth. Runner is too formal for your concept.
