How long it takes to heal depends upon how much you smoke and for how long you have been smoking but it is possible for the lungs to completely heal and for your risk of health problems to revert to that of a never smoker although that may take several years of not smoking. My father has been smoking since his early teens and his lungs are now so bad that he is not able to smoke a single cigarette but he is determined to die a smoker so it is not easy to quit. I have my own smoking cessation program (which is free) but I would need more information before I would hazard a guess as to whether or not it would help you. Unfortunately none of the prescription or over the counter medications or programs works and if they did it would be front page news and you would not need to ask your question. I applaud your desire to quit and that is the first and essential step in good health. It is absolutely true that cigarettes are the most harmful substance that people have ever been exposed to and remains the #1 preventable cause of death in the United States causing about 500 000 deaths per year. To put this in perspective the US lost about 500 000 men in armed combat in all of the 20th century so in a sense cigarettes are 100 times more lethal than war. Good luck.

Hookah is the same stuff. I talked to a doctor about this, and it has the exact same effect. So the answer to your question, is it depends. In biology class we learned there are different stages of lung damage. I think 4 to be exact. If you get to 3, your done cause it doesn't heal and gets worse. Anything below that will heal, but your problem is that because you smoked, you have a higher risk for lung cancer. Hopefully, in the near future they can bio engineer lungs for you! I know I enjoy a good smoke once a week or once a month. My suggestion, is just stop. Its a nasty habit, smells grows, yellows your teeth. Even with hookah, you come out reaking!

your lungs DO completely heal it's self but you have to quit smoking, it may take years but your lung could be as it was before you started smoking, unless you killed off cells [which most likely you did] they will never come bac to life

Don't think that they'll heal completely.
Smoking causes permanent damage to your body.
good thing is that you've stopped smoking and there will be no more damage made to your body. Anyway thank-you for trying to stop smoking b/c i hate smoke. Second hand smoke kills.

I smoked for 26 years. I attended a group hypnosis session advertised in my local paper for $40 and I have never smoked again. It will be 2 years in Feb. I wanted to quit so badly. I had never been hypnotized before. It was amazing. If you really want to stop, go to a clinical hypnotist. There were no withdrawals, no cravings, a little weight gain, but....I didn't care! I am so glad I quit.

They never completely heal, but have a better chance at longer life.

Lay them aside, and try to use willpower. Some people use the nicotine patch and some take chewing gum. I think the desire to quit plays the largest role in your ability to quit.
