Jarvik's artificial heart was intended for temporary use in those awaiting a permanent heart replacement and even in that circumstance problems and risks generally exceed potential benefit. We are still working on a permanent artificial heart. There are also heart 'assist' devices that attach to rather than replace a heart but unfortuantely we have a very long way to go. Alas - physicians have little to offer a heart broken by romance.
