I have had high cholesterol for 15 years. 3 mths ago it was tested at 254. I went on Cholestoff (4 pills a day) and Niacin (2, 500 mg a day) guaranteed to lower and it went up 10 points to 264 3 months later. I'm at my witts end. I have tried eating only low cholesterol foods. Anyone have a suggestion. I don't want to take statin drugs. Thanks

If your cholesterol has been elevated for 15 years despite medical attention you should seek the advice of another physician. With the options available today normalizing cholesterol is not that difficult. The goal for triglycerides, LDL, and HDL cholesterol are dependent upon your cardiovascular risk assessment which includes your family's history of premature cardiovascular disease. The total cholesterol by itself is of little interest to me as it was used to calculate LDL although for nearly a decade I have been measuring this directly. In addition prior to pharmacologic treatment (and I assume that you are already on a lipid lowering diet) I obtain VLDL, VLDL sub types, LDL sub types, HDL sub types, and a few other lipid related tests. I am sorry that your patience has run out but it sounds as if your physician may be partially responsible. Good luck.

Hello Diana

A good diet of veggies, fish, and low saturated fat foods and daily exersize combined with no smoking is the best avenue to lower your cholesteral ( without drugs ).
Now if you take a cholestoral drug it should help in lowering it.

If you are doing this now and its still getting higher you might want to talk to your doc about a stress test. Theres a possibility that you have plaque buildup allready and thats why it continues to raise.

You are doing the right thing by checking on it though for sure. I didnt check my cholesteral and wound up with a quadruple bypass which hopefully you can avoid.

Good luck

Leon
