Yes! I knew someone who's house burned down not too long ago and she asked for donations through her blog. You'd be surprised at how many people are willing to help out in situations like this :)

I suppose sending out cards would be OK if they were sent to the proper institutions or groups. I think that if you wanted to successfully target individuals that would give, you should ask local Pastors to take up a "special offering" for her. This isn't taking advantage of the church, it's letting those people who want to help do so. Check with local food pantries for food and clothing also. Your local Fire Department is probable doing a toy drive and could help get the children some toys. The world is full of Angels if you know where to look. God takes care of the birds and you know He will take care of your sister if she follows The Shepherd.

Couldn't hurt. My sis in law found herself in the same situation a few years back. We went to the local WalMart, American Red Cross & local churches. They all helped out top get her & the kids back on their feet. Believe it or not, WalMart was one of the biggent contributors. they provided a couple of hundred dollars worth of clothing for all 5 in the family. Hope this helps!

Maybe contact your local newspaper and see if they will do a story and set up a bank account in her name so she can get things that she and the kids need to start over.
