Asking for a friend. She is 65 with high cholesterol - 257. A couple of years ago she tried to take Lovastatin to correct the cholesterol. But it seemed to also cause depression. The depression went away when she went off the Lovastatin. But now the cholesterol is higher. Is there another statin that perhaps would not have the depression side effect? She's trying to go vegetarian to lower cholesterol without drugs at this point and I guess this has her doctor's blessing. Thanks.

Good for your friend! I also had very high cholesterol and my doctor was insistent that I take medication. I refused because of the side effects and the liver damage they can cause. I told him I would see him in 6 weeks for a retest. I ate 90% raw foods, alot of barley, and a few supplements. When I retested my cholesterol levels they were perfect! Vegetarian is a great way to lower cholesterol although I did eat about 2oz. of turkey everyday. The weight loss is another added benefit of this dietary change. Good Luck to your friend!

This is really something you should discuss with your doctor. My doctor put me on Niaspan. This lowers your bad cholesterol and raises your good cholesterol. I get blood work done every couple of months to monitor that plus my liver. So far the medicine is working on me. My total cholesterol was at 217. My bad cholesterol was through the roof, so bad it couldn't be read. This is also from my father. I also got hit with the high blood pressure from my mother. Good luck, but definitely talk to your doctor on what is best for you.

What is lovastatin?

Lovastatin is in a group of drugs called HMG CoA reductase inhibitors, or "statins." Lovastatin reduces levels of "bad" cholesterol (low-density lipoprotein, or LDL) and triglycerides in the blood, while increasing levels of "good" cholesterol (high-density lipoprotein, or HDL).
Lovastatin is used to lower the risk of stroke, heart attack, and other heart complications in people with diabetes, coronary heart disease, or other risk factors
Lovastatin is used in adults and children who are at least 10 years old.
Lovastatin may also be used for other purposes not listed in this medication guide.
