you can't prevent diabetes entirely. you can lower your chances if you follow specific guidelines. type 1 diabetes is genetic, so if it runs in the family, your chances of developing it are very high, especially if you don't watch what you eat and don't get enough exercise. type 1 diabetes used to be called 'juvenile diabetes' but now, pretty much anyone who's predisposed can get it at any age. heck, i was diagnosed at age 25. usually after the age of 13, if diagnosed w/ type 1, something had to have triggered it, like a viral infection of some sort or frequent colds, as w/ me. it weakened my immune system and brought it on quickly! way too many people are being diagnosed w/ type 2 diabetes these days and pre-diabetes b/c we live a sedentary lifestyle. we eat fast food/packaged convenient food on the go, and don't bother to get enough fresh air and exercise. BUT HERE'S ONE THING THEY DON'T TELL YOU--BEING UNDER STRESS IS ONE MAJOR RISK FACTOR FOR TYPE 2!!! society as a whole has more stress these days, than say 100 years ago b/c, after all, it's a dog-eat-dog world! (at the risk of sounding cliche.) to lessen your chances of developing type 2 diabetes, you should: refrain from fast food, packaged/convenient food, frozen foods such as frozen dinners, fish sticks, waffles, basically all refined carbs like snacks (cookies, cake, chips) and sugar-based carb-based drinks, like soda (even diet!), and sports drinks, not to mention coffee and caffienated teas (which people are consuming way too much of lately). the use of the internet has made us lazy, as well. how many people now attend ONLINE COURSES, as opposed to going to college? how many people make their purchases online as opposed to going to the mall/stores? and how many people chat/date online as opposed to going out to meet people? do people even go hiking/camping anymore?!

so there it is, preventing type 2 diabetes (rather lowering your risks) is simple. all you have to do is stay away from refined carbs, sweets, and fats; eliminate stress, and exercise more (although opt for walks in the fresh air as opposed to going to the gym. the walks are much more calming, and the fresh air is good for your immune system). if type 1 runs in your family, again stick to the above basics, and hope it doesn't get you.

what TO eat as opposed to what NOT to eat: fresh garden salads (easy on the dressing, in fact, opt for lemon juice and vegetable oil), baked salmon, cooked chicken (skinless), boiled eggs.

and eat beans, rice, oatmeal, corn meal, and things made w/ potatoes and flour SPARINGLY. plus try to limit fruit to 1 or 2 whole fruits per day. avoid fried food!

and, DO NOT smoke, and limit alcohol!

If a diet high in fiber, variety of vegetables, adequate protein and plenty of water can help stablilize type 2 diabetes, I believe it could prevent it, also. Make sure you get a large variety of foods, so that your vitamin and mineral intake is adequate. Take a supplement. Drink enough water, 64 ounces plus per day if you are inactive, more if you are active at all. Extra water if you consume caffiene or alcohol. Eat good quality protein each meal and have a protein snack during the day. If you have a family history of diabetes, stay away from corn, and read labels. High fructose corn syrup is added to many foods, and almost all diabetics I have spoken with say they get a high bg reading after a meal with corn. Do eat beans, though, they are a good source of protein and fiber. The fiber is so important, because it slows the digestion of the carbohydrates, and the blood sugar rises more slowly and evenly. Also, walk daily, ride your bike, whatever you like just as long as you are regularly active.

There is no way to prevent type 1 diabetes (juvenile onset).
Type two diabetes (adult onset) risk factors are age, obesity, sedentary (lazy) lifestyle, and family history. A healthy weight, balanced diet, and exercise are proven to prevent diabetes as well as get rid of diabetes in dedicated individuals. The Amercan Diabetic Association is a great resource on Diabetes prevention and a diet that is not just for Diabetics but it is healthy for almost anyone.

I am writing to tell you what an incredible impact these methods had on my life! I have had type 2 diabetes for 27 years. For me, the worst part of this horrible disease is the severe pain I constantly get in my feet. The pain is so bad that I avoid standing and walking as much as possible. I've got to tell you that within the first month, my feet stopped hurting altogether and I can now walk totally pain free.

Living a healthy and active lifestyle can help prevent some diabetes, this includes regular exercise and avoiding very sugary foods which trigger imbalances in the blood sugar levels. But other types of diabetes are genetic and can therefore be aided and managed with certain lifestlye changes, but not entirely prevented :-) x

preventing diabetes (type 2) is strongly related to preventing obesity.
Therefore maintaining a normal weight is essential, or losing weight if one is already overweight or obese.
This can be done by increasing the level of physical activity and reducing the amount of calories per day (minus 500-1000, depending on the degree of obesity)
It's also important to reduce the amount of foods rich in fat, especially saturated fat (fast food, mc Donalds, etc), to eat more veggies, fibers.
In conclusion, a healthy lifestyle.
Some studies tried to prevent diabetes using diff drugs, the Dream study showed promising results in preventing diabetes, it used rosiglitazone.
Still, I believe that lifestyle optimisation is the best way to do it, cheaper, no side effects, and it prevents cardiovascuar diseases too.

There is no way to absolutely prevent diabetes but certain actions certainly make it less likely. Some of these relate directly to the risk of diabetes and others indirectly or influence the problems associated with diabetes: remain lean (thin), maintain an exercise program, avoid glucose (sweets), avoid salt, avoid fats, avoid cholesterol, limit (or avoid) alcohol, and never smoke. Good advice is easy to give but people and their lives are complex and few physicians follow their own advice and in my case my sole flaw is that I do not have an exercise program.

Very good question.There are 2 methods to prevent or at least delaying diabetes.One is life style modification which involves adequate calorie intake and <30% fat intake per day with regular exercise.Second is usage of drugs like rosiglitazone,acarbose,metformin and if one is obese,using orlistat.First method is better to adopt.Its conclusively proven that for each 1 kg weight loss,risk of diabetes is lessened by 16% over 5 years.

You cant prevent type 1 as it is autoimmune related
You can prevent type 2 with a healthy lifestyle (good diet, low in simple carbs and exercise)
