He's nuts. He may even be wrong about what constitutes "high" -- you don't say what your reading is. Before statin drugs came on the market a normal reading was between 4-6. Then the drug reps came in and told the doctors it should be 2. Why? To market the new drugs. Dietary changes can lower cholesterol, so can herbal remedies, nutritional supplements and Homeopathic treatment. Just taking omega 3 fish oil supplements can lower it (1,000mg 3 times a day with meals). Your doctor is wrong.

I don't know exactly what you mean by regulation of cholesterol, but I can give you some information regarding choesterol. Cholestero is a fat that's produced by the liver. It's also found in the foods we eat that come from animals, like meats, eggs yolks, shellfish, and whole milk dairy products.

Our bodies need cholesterol to function. But too much cholesterol can be bad for our health.

When our bodies make too much cholesterol or too much is absorbed from the foods that we eat, it gets deposited in our arteries as plaque.

Whether you have high cholesterol can depend on your family history. Some people inherit genes associated with elevated levels of cholesterol. This is called familial hypercholesterolemia. These people may eat well and exercise, and still have high cholesterol. For others, diet and lifestyle determine cholesterol levels. The more fats they eat, especially from meat and dairy products, the higher their cholesterol levels may be.

There are two main types of cholesterol that can affect your health:

"Bad" cholesterol
Low-density lipoproteins, or LDL, are known as the bad cholesterol that can clog your arteries and put you at risk for heart disease.

"Good" cholesterol
High-density lipoproteins, or HDL, have been nicknamed good cholesterol because it actually helps remove bad cholesterol from the body.

There is a third type of cholesterol, called very-low-density lipoprotein, or VLDL. VLDL contains a kind of fat called triglycerides. High triglycerides, like high cholesterol, can put you at risk for heart disease.

The cholesterol levels in the blood can be known by undergoing the blood test for 'lipid profile". If the bad cholesterol is high,it can be reduced by "statin" drugs. This is the present mode of keeping the cholesterol in control in our blood apart from diet control like avoiding all high cholesterol foods like, ghee, butter etc.

I hope this will give you insight in relation to your question.

Sources are your food and that which your liver makes. Stay way from fast foods and saturated fats. If not below 200 see your Dr for meds.
