Depends on what STD it is. There is a very popular STD called Human Papilloma Virus that has many strains to it. The different strains can be checked to tell you where it is possible to have gotten it from.

One rare one is passed from mom to child during delivery.

If both have not had sex with anybody, dont use IV needles, it is not common to get std's. Some bugs can live on toilet seats but not for very long. Chlamydia, Syphallis, Gonorrhea are usually sexually tramsmitted... key work,"sexually". But depending on what it is, i'd research it.

There are 2 reasons that i know you can get a STD one from sex without protection or from being with more than one person having sex or from using random needles you find on the ground to insert drugs and stuff

You can occasionally get them from oral sex, treading on needles or injecting, even sharing a towel with someone is a slight risk factor, through birth, childhoood diseases.
