I'm not very fond of meat to begin with. Earlier in life, I used to be a carnivore, practically. But now I'm in my early 20s and I can't stand the sight/smell/taste of meat. I'll be completely honest. The only reason I want to be vegetarian is because of better health.
But there are certain things that keep holding me back. My boyfriend of 6 years is an omnivore. And although I know he'll support me, I feel it might complicate matters if I went veggie.
My question is, do you have a significant other who isn't a vegetarian, but you are? How did you deal with it? Is it really difficult for you? Like, when you go out to eat, order in food, etc? Thanks :)
PS - Please no replies on how giving up meat is bad for me... I know if I became veggie, it would be one of the best decisions I'd probably make. :)

Nicole, I tried... but to be honest, I get more grossed out watching raw meat in the supermarket than those PETA videos. :S

crgcarol, it doesn't matter to me whether man was intended to be omnivore or herbivore... for me, it's just a matter of health, with all the diseases and illnesses carried by meat these days. But thanks for your concern. :)

I'm a veggie and substituting meat for quorn or similar products is an easy way to get around home cooking. It doesn't taste much different, in fact lack of fat and discolouring makes it slightly more pleasant. Your bf probably won't notice the change. Also all restaurants must serve a veggie option so eating out is no problem. I don't think going veggie is necessarily going to do much for your health, but when I think of all the drugs that are pumped into meat as a means of colouring and preserving its enough to put me off.

The only reason that it would be difficult is if your boyfriend absolutely refused to support you in your choice. If he accepts it, you should be OK. There are plenty of restaurants that offer both options for when you go out. When you cook veggie for him be considerate and use ingredients that mimic meat like Portobello mushroom fajitas or chili made with veggie crumbles. Likewise when he cooks for you, ask him to make plenty of veggie side dishes so you can just skip the meaty main course he might want. Don't make a big deal about it and all will be well.
Happy (and healthy) eating!

Hey
My boyfriend is a CHEF. Talk about tough to avoid a lot of things that are prepared. But it's all about respect and talking things through. I'm a vegetarian and I'm probably the pickiest eater you'll ever find. But take things one step at a time. I went vegetarian for my health, as well as weight loss. Now it's all about animal rights. My boyfriend appreciates this and things are great - He's even had to learn a few tricks because of my vegetarianism.

I used to LOVE bacon, roast beef, meatloaf, steak, you name it.
Pretty much, it was my stubbornness that made me a veggie. My parents said 2 days before thanksgiving they doubted I would be able to not eat turkey. I hate being wrong, so now I have been a vegetarian for a little more than a year.
My suggestion for you is to rid your huse of all meat, so you won't be able to eat it even if you want to.

My brother is a hardcore veggie; his wife has become one by default. She only has meat when having dinner at other people's houses or at restaurants.
She seems to cope with it, but from what I can see, the choice has been pretty much taken away from her.
If you support your boyfriend's choices, and you're both prepared to cook 2 meals occasionally, it should work out. Discuss it with him, not me!

It's alot easier than you think! It's only for the first few weeks that you sort of think about meat, after that you'll pretty much forget it even exists. If you're the sort of person who craves meat, then for the first few weeks try and completely avoid meats, and you should be ok after that :)

watch peta videos and gross yourself out so you won't even want to get near meat!
My bf is a vegetarian and i'm not, but i don't eat meat that much. we go to restaurants that we know have good vegetarian food and so it's not really an issue. i tend to not eat meat around him and i even tried going veg. the best way i know to do it is just quit cold turkey, no pun intended, and watch peta videos on how they treat animals before they slaughter them. it will disgust you and you'll want to be a vegetarian for good!
GOOD LUCK!!!! :-D
