Die hard southerner here. I love it. Lightly breaded with corn meal and fried quickly till tender. Here is how you separate the true okra eaters--- how many will eat it boiled?

I love it fried, steamed with fresh tomatoes and in soups and gumbo. I also grow it in the summer and freeze some for winter. Great vegetable. People should give it a chance. It is alot tastier than beets, eggplant and over cooked spinach. I have to add something here, after seeing all the good responses. If your temperatures are in the 80 90 or even 100's you can grow your own Okra very simply. Most garden stores have plants and or seeds. It does not need much except no weeds around it when it is small, water, and a little fertilizer, I like Fish Emulsion, natural and stinky, but great. You can have your Okra year around.

I love okra.
Is this the one?
1 pound okra pods, stem ends cut off, sliced 1/4-inch thick
salt
cold water
yellow cornmeal
salt and pepper
PREPARATION:
Put sliced okra in a bowl, sprinkle generously with sal; cover with very cold water. Refrigerate the okra for at least 1 hour. Drain; roll okra slices in cornmeal seasoned with salt and pepper until well-coated.
Fry in a deep skillet in about 1/2-inch of hot oil until browned and crisp. Drain on paper towels and serve hot.
2 to 4 servings.

I love okra, whether it's fried or in soup or with shrimp and rice, whatever. But because I live in a small town in upstate NY it's very rare that the stores sell it fresh, or that they even know what it is. Tried the frozen stuff, but that usually comes out slimey.
