This is a critical issue as it not only affects the quality of your life, it affects your health.

Like broaching most sensitive issues, there is probably not an 'easy' way to do it. You need to summon up your courage and just go for it. You cannot control their reaction and you cannot change their habits. You CAN control how you approach them, and how you respond to them in any subsequent discussion. You can be kind and respectful and most importantly, don't wait until you are angry and frustrated to talk to them.

I suggest you find a time without other people around and let them know you have something to talk to them about that is difficult but important to you. Share that while you love them, their smoking is having an impact on people and things around them. Make it about the smoking and the effects and not about them and who they are. If they are receptive you may have an opportunity to suggest ways to reduce the impact of their habit on others....like not smoking inside the house or car.

Remember, if people know you care about them, they can hear constructive criticism more easily.

Good luck and let us know how it goes!

do what i did....tell them to stop smoking for a week or so.......when they do they will see that even when they open their closet doors, their clothes stink! They can smell a person who has been smoking from like a mile away.....and they may crave a cigarette, but they will see how much it smells! I believe that they do not smell it because they are constantly in the smell....because after they smoke, their clothes smell like it, their hair smells like it, and their breath smells like it!! That is the reason they cannot smell the difference until they quit for little while!

Try this : "Your cigarette smoking is causing EVERYTHING around you to have a tremendous odor".

Exactly how you told us. It is offensive. Only a few of my friends smoke, and after they leave my house I have to spray Febreze on the furniture and in the air, because their stinky clothes make my furniture smell like smoke, and they smell up the whole house like an old ashtray.

If the other answers don't work, use the fish analogy:

A fish doesn't know its wet, its always wet so it doesn't know anything else. A smoker has grown so accustomed to the smell its not there any more.

WE know a fish is wet, WE know a smoker smells, but the fish and the smoker do not.

As a smoker please just tell us. If someone told me that it might help me to at least cut down or smoke outside
