Hello
I couldnt say your lungs would return to normal as in the way they were prior to smoking but I can say that they will get much better.
They will start healing themselves immediately and you will feel the effects immediately.
After 15 years of not smoking your lungs will return almost to the original state.
There is no good reason to continue smoking and many great reasons to quit.
No matter how long you have smoked it is never to late to quit and you control wether you smoke or not. The cigs have no control other then what you give to them.

Your lungs can never go back to the way they were before you ever started smoking. Your lungs are in bad shape. I was taking biology in college and we actually had the chance to view a human lung of about 15 years of smoking and it was grey and brown in color. The lung had actually looked like it was mutated from the smoking. You are doing yourself some good if you are done puffing your lungs away with cigs. You will notice though that you will be breathing easier when moving around or doing physical activities if quit now.

Well, to be sure of how damaged yout lungs are you should take a medical test, but they're probably very bad. After 5 years without smoking you will get the half of the condition you had before you started smoking.

After 15 years... They're pretty bad.
your lungs will never be in the condition they were in before you started smoking...
But you will be able to do a lot of things that you can't do while smoking.

How bad it is would be based on your genetic and lifestyle factors. Some people smoke all their life and live to be in their 90's, others like my aunt died of lung cancer. She was a workaholic who didn't take care of her health very well and smoked a lot. So you need to look at other areas of your life.
Also, smoking can affect more than just your lungs My mother was a long term smoker and now she has a lot of heart problems that have required 9 heart procedures with tubes going up the veins in the legs.
If you want to keep smoking, perhaps try getting your own bag of tobacco, and theose cigarette filters, and rolling your own cigarettes? It may be cleaner tobacco plus you can make your own pck of smokes for $1.00/pack

Absolutely, my guy smoked from 19-49 years old and Xrays can't even tell he was a smoker after 6 years of non smoking. I think I read somewhere your lungs start to heal within weeks.

No, once you get scars on the lungs (Cigarette smoking, pneumonia, bronchitis), they are there forever; however, you can lower your risk for arterial heart disease, lung cancer, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (which most people who smoke die from). Hope you are able to quit. I have been smoking 30 years now. I know the risks and yet I keep doing it. I'm totally addicted.
