My father in law developed a similar reaction (in his 60's!) to anything with citric acid in it. Lips and gums swell for a few days 18 hours after he is exposed to it. Sometimes you can see it and sometimes you would never know cause it's all in his mouth! It usually takes 2 days to go away.

The doctors have been totally puzzled on this. No one has ever heard of this kind of allergy. They have all warned him to have an epi-pen ready just in case he has trouble breathing, though that has not happened yet.

Unfortunately, he used to be able to take zyrtec, but then developed a resistance to it and nothing else seems to work. So the only solution for him is to try to avoid it.

This seems very similar to your reaction so while it might be unusual, it's not unheard of. Good Luck!

I am allergic to poultry, but it gives me severe diarrhea for three days. I have to watch the labels on lunch meat and hot dogs. It is possible to eat poultry without knowing it at the time. Just read labels. Sometimes companies change the ingredients when they change the packaging design.
