No your not dead yet! They can put you under into such a deep sleep that your body doesn't even feel the effects of what they're doing. I had a quadruple by-pass, & they actually use a small type circular saw to cut the rib cage into! Of course the bones don't have any feeling in them, but when I came to there wasn't any real significant pain. they can give you medication through the IV that numbs the pain in the area until the body can handle it on it's own. I think the worst thing about any type of major surgery is getting the IV stuck into you.

Uh, no. You are given anesthesia and medications that put you in a state of unconsciousness but you are still alive with normal vital signs. It's like going into a very deep sleep. The anesthesiologist is there to administer these meds and his/her sole responsibility is to make sure you maintain normal vital signs.
