The phrase "bless you" started because people used to believe that when you sneezed, your soul left your body for a second, and to guard against anything happening to you at that instant, they would say "bless you" - back in more religious times.

Although no-one believes this now, it's still accepted by most as a nice thing to say.

The right thing is saying : Gesundheit !!! It's a German word and it means "good health" ! Why Americans say "bless you" I never understood. How can you bless someone ? Is everybody a preacher now ? By the way, it's very common to say Gesundheit in the states. I've heard it many times by better educated people.

Bless you is the proper one. I never heard sorry or take it easy before when I sneezed.

well rumour has it that when you sneeze your heart skips a beat so for that spilt second its not moving at all. some think of it as a miracle that a heart can stop and start again, sort of a blessing. Perhaps thats were the phrase "bless you" comes from.

I usually go with something that is ALMost close to being something resembling what could be mistaken for an atttempt at a joke...something like 'You call that a sneeze? the windows are still intact."

Well, personally I glare at them if they haven't used a hankie...or said excuse me after polluting my space...

'Bless you' is for priests, 'sorry' is for when you trip over them , and 'take it easy' is for when they are going on holiday.
