Iron is the product from a blast furnace that combines and heats iron ore, coal or coke, and limestone. The iron ore or iron oxide is chemically reduced to iron.

Iron is brittle because it has too much carbon picked up from the carbon in the coal and coke in the blast furnace. To convert it to steel there are several possibilities. The old fashion way was a Bessemer converter. However, modern steel mills utilize the Basic Oxygen Furnace. The Basic Oxygen Process injects oxygen into the molten iron. The Oxygen combines with Carbon and off gases as Carbon Dioxide CO2. It requires 2 oxygen molecules to take out one carbon molecule, This isn't a big deal because it is injected as O2. After the carbon has been removed, you will have a much more ductile material with the properties of steel.

mr wiz is right,,, you reduce the level of carbon by using oxygen.

when you add carbon to it . that makes it harder and steel but i think around 1.3% .
