I need to melt a shape on a peice of plastic to make a stencil. But so far i've tried copper and metal is there something that will hold the heat ( stay hotter longer than these two?

Why don't you try using a soldering iron? Heck of a lot easier if your metal STAYS hot.

The conductivity of the metal makes no difference if you are trying to RETAIN heat. You just need mass for that. Thats why intuitively you stay away from aluminum (although it is a good conductor) - no mass.

Try cast iron. It is cheap and if you get a big hunk of it hot, it will stay that way a long time.

Copper has excellent thermal conductivity, but that means it transfers heat well. Therefore, it will cool more quickly after being heated. As mentioned, this is probably not what you're looking for.

A chunk of iron or steel will probably work for what you want to do.

I think Mercury has better heat conducting property.
