I'm Asian. Popularity measures how big companies try to get his service as an endorser of their products or services. In the Philippines, he got SMC (alcohol products), Darlington (socks), Motolite (Car Battery), Alaxan (medicine), I-on, Thunder (Energy Drink), Mcdonalds (Food chain), Extreme (singing ent. device) as well as, an icon of ABS-CBN (Tv networks) not only that even Phil. gov't taps him to endorse them in Tax Collection & Anti-drug campaign. etc. Internationally, he has NO FEAR & NIKE (imagine that), aside from being asked to throw ceremonial pitch in Major League Baseball) Pacman joins an elite list of world-recognized personalities to open up a baseball game.... Well, I don't think he is popular.

I'm Puerto Rican , and i known Paquiao for a long time , I love The Paquiao vs Barrera fight , He is to Philippines what Tito Trinidad is for Puerto Rico , an Idol of all a reason for every one to be united as a country, a living legend. I will like to See him fight with Barrera for the WBC Super Featherweight Title and become the Ring champion again . If not Juan Manuel Marquez fight is cool. But it really doesn't matter PAC will destroy them both.
My two favorite fighters right now are Cotto and Paquiao they always make very exciting fights no matter what.
No doubt Paquiao will go down as the the Best boxer Philippine had produced and a all time great when all is said and done IMO.

Manny Pacquiao is to the Phillippines what Jordan is to the US. The Phillipes is a poor country that does not fund any sort of sports, but when u got a fast and powerful boxer that makes it big time people are going to idolize him because there is no other great sports figure from that country. Manny has gained my respect as a boxer since his third battle with Morales.

Being Canadian we don't get much boxing coverage so Manny was a contender before I even heard his name but I"m lucky enough to have gotten engaged to a Pinay .When he won she said back home was nuts and the whole Philippines were united for that reason.I had to do an Internet search to get information as the Canadian press didn't even have a little coverage.

I am a Filipino but I can answer your question on other else's mouths:
1) Wilfredo Gomez
This legendary Puerto Rican boxer was a former WBC super bantamweight and featherweight champion who beat most of his opponents via KO and TKO. His undefeated streak ended at the hands of another legend, Salvador Sanchez.
When asked who in boxing he would pay money for to see, he stated that without a shadow of a doubt, it would be Manny Pacquiao.
2) Julio Cesar Chavez
This Mexican legend was a former 3-weight titlist and had a great career, not having a loss in his first 80+ fights, before losing to Frankie Randall. It would be this record of 3-weight titles that MAB and EM are trying to break as 4-weight titles.
When he met Rolando Bohol at the hotel where Bohol worked, he said that he respects Filipino fighters, especially Manny Pacquiao.
3) Floyd Mayweather, Jr.
"I told everybody, who was around me and with me that Pacquiao will stop Morales. I didn't bet on him but I like him,"
"Most definitely and it will be another stoppage. Barrera is a great fighter but Pacquiao is unbelievable."
He is a 4-division titlist and considered by many as the top pound-for-pound fighter in the world. He is currently undefeated and is scheduled to meet Oscar Dela Hoya next year for boxing supremacy.
During MP-EM II, he was seen at the sideline cheering for Manny Pacquiao. Sometime after the fight, he commented in one of his interviews that Pacquiao was "unbelievable". Although he would return to his "I'm the greatest ever" statement afterwards... LOL!!!
4) Chatchai Sasakul
"Manny Pacquiao!!! One good punch from him and I was out. He has very heavy hands."
This former WBC flyweight title is regarded as one of the top fighters in Thailand's history. He is best remembered by us filipinos as the person who was challenged by a very young Manny Pacquiao and MP beat him by KO in the 8th round, despite having the better fundamentals and dominating the early rounds.
When asked who was the strongest puncher he ever faced, he replied that it was Manny Pacquiao, and it was just one punch that did it and he was down for the count.
5) Winky Wright
This long-time middleweight titlist is regarded as one of the best technicians in the sport, and one of the best pound-for pound. He is scheduled to face Ike Quartey tomorrow.
After watching the grand finale at ringside he was inspired, but he did not guarantee the same fireworks in his next fight, saying he does not fight like Manny Pacquiao and Quartey does not fight like Morales.
6) Jorge Arce
This 2-division champion from Mexico is one of the most exciting fighters today. Like Manny Pacquiao, expect to see fireworks everytime he fights.
After watching his countryman Erik Morales getting dominated in disbelief during the Grand Finale, he then said that Manny Pacquiao is the best fighter in the world, and that Erik Morales was in very good shape but Manny Pacquiao still dominated him.
7) James Toney - "Hey Pacquiao, I want him(Erik) to fall on his face! I want him pancaked this time, not on his back!"
8) Muhammad Ali - He said in an interview few years ago that he sees his young-self on Manny Pacquiao. In a phone patch, he called Manny the Small Ali because he said he got the gifts and the heart. He said Manny was a real warrior, a winner. The real thing. He likened Manny to himself who would fight the best and would not give up no matter what.
9) Oscar Dela Hoya - He claims that Manny Pacquiao is the best by not letting go on the tug-of-war with Arum.
10.) Erik Morales - Muy rapido. LOL!!!
11) Marco Antonio Barrera - He said Manny Pacquiao was the best on his post fight interview on his rematch on Rocky Juarez.
12) Jorge Barrios - "Pacquiao is a tremendous fighter, but he does not have the same big name (Barrera).
13) Chris John - "Pacquiao, of course. He's rated No. 1 in the world. I have seen his fights and he's really great. All fighters in the featherweight division are great. (Marco Antonio) Barrera is also still there. Just recently, he TKO'd (Paulie) Ayala."
14) Brian Viloria - "His (Pacquiao's) victory over Morales inspired me to fight well and show the world the stuff of Filipinos."
15) Brandon Vera - "I would like to become the Manny Pacquiao of MMA"
16) Sylvester Stallone - "He (Pacquiao) is the Elvis Presley of the Philippines."
17) MIKE TYSON -"He is like an energizer bunny!"
LOL! LOL! LOL! LOL! LOL!
