The surrealist movement of visual art and literature, flourished in Europe between World Wars I and II. The major spokesman of the movement, André Breton, was a Frenchman, so I suppose it could be claimed that France was the birthplace of Surreaslism. In 1924, Breton published 'The Surrealist Manifesto'. The artists in the movement researched and studied the works of Sigmund Freud and Carl Jung.

In France, definitely. Prevert, Breton, Paul Eluard, Jean ARP (German-French sculptor, painter and poet) -also called Hans Arp- are some of the "fathers" of surrealism. Then the Spanish took over (Miro, Gaudi) and a lot of others (Paul Klee, Chagall, etc.)
