Commercial interests keep winning against public health issues. Junk future is the national dish, Americans are patriotic about drinking Coke, and eating hamburgers. Attempts to ban them in public schools fail due to huge lobbying pressure of big business. Portions in restaurants and quantities available in supermarkets are twice as large as in any other country. There are few cycle paths, open spaces and urban footpaths are discouraged by town planners or avoided due to street crime, those who build cities assume the only menas of transport is the car. Many kids end up spending hours on sedentary activities - watching TV or playing computer games.

Uh, oh! Bad grammar strikes again.
A country cannot be fat. Planet is misspelled.
Yours is a leading question, who says the USA has the most fat people?
If it is true, it is a sign of prosperity. We have more to eat, on average, than people of other counties. We have, on average, easier work, so a sedentary life style can contribute to obesity.

When a person gets bored, his first reaction is to eat. That is why women after menopause start eating and get fat.
By the same analogy I think United States, is a very rich country therefore has a huge population of bored persons, who have nothing to do. Therefore they eating and getting fat.
