Christ, the royal Master, leads against the foe;
forward into battle, see, his banners go!
Refrain:
Onward, Christian soldiers, marching as to war,
with the cross of Jesus going on before.
At the sign of triumph Satan's host doth flee;
on then, Christian soldiers, on to victory!
Hell's foundations quiver at the shout of praise;
brothers, lift your voices, loud your anthems raise.
(Refrain)
Like a mighty army moves the church of God;
brothers, we are treading where the saints have trod.
We are not divided, all one body we,
one in hope and doctrine, one in charity.
(Refrain)
Crowns and thrones may perish, kingdoms rise and wane,
but the church of Jesus constant will remain.
Gates of hell can never gainst that church prevail;
we have Christ's own promise, and that cannot fail.
(Refrain)
Onward then, ye people, join our happy throng,
blend with ours your voices in the triumph song.
Glory, laud, and honor unto Christ the King,
this through countless ages men and angels sing.
(Refrain)

Yeah my favourite, sums up my Christian religion a treat,
The writer odf nthe lyrics, Baring-Gould wrote about this hymn:
. I wanted the children to sing when marching from one village to another, but couldn’t think of anything quite suitable; so I sat up at night, resolved that I would write something myself. “Onward, Christian Soldiers” was the result. It was written in great haste, and I am afraid some of the rhymes are faulty. Certainly nothing has surprised me more than its popularity. .
The first verse is,
Onward, Christian soldiers, marching as to war,
With the cross of Jesus going on before.
Christ, the royal Master, leads against the foe;
Forward into battle see His banners go!
You missed a line and You missed a verse
What the saints established that I hold for true.
What the saints believèd, that I believe too.
Long as earth endureth, men the faith will hold,
Kingdoms, nations, empires, in destruction rolled.
Brass Band leading banners flying the Salvation Army dont need guns with music like this, Muslims aint got nothing even remotely comparable.,
Not like in Zulu with Michael Caine when the Zulu horde attacked the 100 Welshmen, and old Dai started singing Men of Harlech, and the lads joined in and the Zulus were gruntin and the welsh singing and as they attacked the Zulus heard the Welsh and the Zulus are fine musicians and they realised that anyone who sung that badly must be fightin men not musicians and it was so bad they stuck their fingers in their ears and its hard to chuck a spear with your fingers in your ears.

"Onward Christian Soldiers" is a wonderful old Song of The Church. It speaks to The role of The Church as a Spiritual Army, Marching against The Gates of Hell. The Gates of Hell cannot prevail over The Church of God. The Church will Battle Satan, and as it says in Jude, snatch souls from The very Gates of Hell !

The song refers to spiritual warfare, not armed combat against fellow human beings. Satan and his minions are our real enemies. One day I hope that we realize this and stop killing one another over silliness and people the world over join Christ in the real battle for our eternal lives.

It is a shame that that song has been cast out of many church hymnbooks.... wrong-headed people think that it is talking about and promoting violence or militarism....nothing could be farther from the truth... well, i guess there are things that are farther from the truth, but you know what i mean...
god bless!!
forward into battle!!

The war is spiritual in nature, a battle against our sinful inclinations, against our persecutors and everything that might stop us from being Christians.
