They used to be a real organization. But in the conspiratorial kook universe they are a modern secret society. I think they are a fig newton of fertile paranoid minds. Bottom line: look for the Anti-Semitism. It is at the root of all these kook-fringe theories like the Illuminati. Best to avoid people that dwell on this thinly-disguised hatred of and fear of Jews.

They're a ppl claiming to be unusually enlightened with regard to a subject. It's also any of various groups claiming special religious enlightenments.
Some would call them "Specialists of religion" or even a 'cult' to others.
It really just depends on the ppl, the subject, and how your beliefs interact with theirs.
