it has woken me up and hurts so badly that it takes hours to stop hurting.... yesterday it started at 2 AM and I didn't get to bed until 9 AM...

what could this be?

It could be something more than heartburn. It could be related to your heart. Possibly even angina. If the pain is severe I would go to an ER or urgent care and get it taken care of immediately. It could be acid reflux as well, but it's worth it to find out what is causing it. Heart disease knows no age and does not discriminate. I started getting angina at just 23 years of age. It's probably nothing to worry about but it's better to be safe than sorry and no one should suffer needlessly!
