That is a debatable question for sure. Currently English is considered the dominant language of business and aviation, but it certainly isn't the dominant language as far as numbers are concerned, since Chinese has the edge there. And as stated earlier, that situation may (probably will) change as the power block changes location. I know the Americans don't want to hear that, but history will (and has for the previous dominant languages) tell.
On a similar note, Esperanto has made a surge in popularity as an international language, which is what it was intended for. As with anything of value, it will take time, but eventually it will make itself a widely excepted tool for international relations. A good demonstration of it's growing popularity is that Esperanto, as of 1990, ranked 65th most numerous new books in print in the world. Which when you consider it has a general speaking number of people around two million, and that there are in excess of 6000 languages in the world, is quite a large number of publications.

At different times in history, different languages have been dominated.
As little as a hundred years ago, scientific and mathamatical findings were written and talked about mainly in german and latin.
English became the dominate language of the western world because of the english leaving england and settling other lands. these people then led the field in technology, mathamatics and science.
With so much useful information being written in english, came the need for other contries to understand what was happening in technology, mathamatics and science.
While the most important information is being released in english, it will remain the world's leading language.

it has now, the same purpose as latin in the middle age.

Because currently, England and the U.S.A are the most important (or dominating) countries in the world.
