You don't have to go to the hospital unless you are in a lot of pain or have other problems. I have had 2 miscarriages and I will tell you about them. Hopefully it will help.
First miscarriage happened naturally at 8 weeks. I bled bright red for a day with cramps like a period, then it started to get BAD. It hurt so much. I went to the E.R. and I'm glad I did because while I was there my blood pressure went down to 50/30 and they couldn't even get a needle in me for a transfusion (I'm not trying to scare you and I'll tell you how to avoid this happening to you in a minute). Then I recovered. I got a shot of morphine and then went home. I continued to bleed. Two days later I lost the sac and placenta. By then my bleeding was just like a period.
Second miscarriage- I found out the baby was dead but he wasn't coming out. My doctor gave me cytotec pills to induce the miscarriage at 11 weeks. I started taking the pills and started bleeding within an hour. After about 5 hours it got really bad and the baby came out. My doctor told me when it got bad to do uterine massage. Basically you push on your uterus really hard. Go right above your pubic bone and push in with your fingers. Push your fingers in and move them around, then take them out and repeat the process. If you do this right you will be sore the next day but it will keep you from having the blood pressure problem I had with my first miscarriage. After having the baby I went to the E.R. because the lortab I had been given didn't help. I knew I was going to be fine but went to the E.R. to get morphine since I had found out the last time that it was so good (no I am not an addict. These are the only 2 times in my life I'd ever had it)
Hopefully that helps. Miscarrying at home is perfectly safe unless you start hemorrhaging or fainting or something, but if you feel like it would be safer or you just want a nice shot of a good painkiller, go ahead and go to the E.R. It will probably get worse before it gets better, sorry to say, but the bad part shouldn't last more than a few hours.
I hope this doesn't scare you but I'm trying to be totally honest with you so you know what to expect. If you are only 5-6 weeks or so it won't be nearly as bad as my experiences were.
You probably do not need a D&C. That's only if not everything comes out. If everything comes out the pain will go down like with a period how the cramps get better after the first day or so and you will be bleeding bright red with only small clots. If you wonder if everything is out you can go to the doctor but I wouldn't automatically go for the D&C- most people don't need one. If you are retaining anything you will need the D & C, but actually it's better to wait until after the miscarriage because then you do the dialating yourself and they just have to go in there and clean you out. They did that for me on my second miscarriage just because I wasn't sure if everything was out (it was) and they didn't have to put me out or anything. My doctor just did it in his office and it took 2 minutes.

this is crazy.....i just watched a show on discovery 1 hour ago where a girl had a miscarriage and the doctor wanted her to have it work its way out naturally......she cramped for a few days and it stopped bleeding, so she thought everything was over.....then she ended up dying in her sleep from internal bleeding...she ended up having an undiagnosed ectopic pregnancy and the egg ruptured her fallopian tube and caused her to pool 2 liters of blood in her body, killing her......
go to the doctor!!!!!!!!!

Hun I don't care what your doc said.. You need to get to a hospital and have them do a DNC on you, if you are having a miscarriage...You cannot just assume that you will pass all the matter from your miscarriage .. Your insides need to be cleaned from all the dead matter...
Also, as others have said...You can bleed to death from a miscarriage.. I almost did...
GO TO A HOSPITAL....NOW!!!!!

I'm so sorry for you. If the blood is bright red, I think your supposition is right. Seek medical help now.
