It's possible that your skin is rejecting that particular brand/type of ink, but the first alarm bell I see is that you washed it with soap after only three hours.
I have two tattoos, and my artist told me NOT to use soap on the area for at least 24 hours. It was ugly for a bit, with a lot of the ink bleeding out, but once the 24 hours had passed, I washed it with an unscented, very mild soap, and the gunk came off leaving my colors clear and crisp.
Someone else mentioned your clothing rubbing against it, and that could be a problem too. I taped a non-stick gauze pad or folded bit of paper towel (the very soft, high-quality brand, not the cheapie stuff) over mine for the first week where my clothes rubbed against it. That took me beyond the peeling stage and well into fully-healed.
You didn't say exactly where the tattoo is. Is it in an area that was exposed to sunlight? That would also damage the vividness of the color...the same sun that will "tan" or darken your skin will also fade and break down most tattoo inks. Keep tattoos out of the sun.
To get your color back, you will need to go back for a touch-up. Once the ink is gone, it's gone.

Most people do not take to red well. Something about the pigment in the ink, our bodies tend to attack it and try to break it down. This is most likely what has occoured. You can wait about 3 months then return to your Artist for a touch up in the area. Your skin should be used to the ink being there and it should do fine this time around. Also try using Aveno with oat oil insted of the cream that you are using. My last tattoo had alot of reds and pinks in it and this helped with the healing and the color came out better when I used it as oppose to using another product. If you cant find that I would use INK FIX this is sold at most Shops, but you can also buy it cheaply online. These lubricants are made to help with keeping the color as vibrant as possible. Good luck next time.

For some reason, a lot of people have a hard time with red ink, so I wouldn't get worked up about this.
What you can do, is go back and see your tattoo artist. Explain this to them, and they SHOULD do a touch-up and re-apply the ink for free.
If they don't do free touch-ups, then I would take my tattoo business elsewhere. :)

clothes rubbing on it could be a problem. Also, the tattoo artist I went to has said that red fades more and faster then a lot of other colors do.

did the artist change ink different brand ink colour gun which would explain the different depths. I am fair skinned and my body doesn't except white it fades almost instantly. You can get it recoloured now rather than later but will hurt more cause of scare tissue
